What you'll find
Terraces and town houses around the canal and the city centre, established estates on the hills on both sides of the city, a good supply of newer developments, and rural homes across south Armagh and towards the Mournes.
Who buys here
Local families and first-time buyers, staff at Daisy Hill Hospital, business owners, people who commute to Dublin or work across the border, and commuters heading north to Banbridge, Lisburn and Belfast.
Getting about
Newry station, just outside the city, is on the Belfast to Dublin line. The A1 runs north to Belfast and becomes the M1 south of the border towards Dublin.
Mortgage points to note
- Income in euros. Many UK lenders won't count income paid in another currency, or reduce it by a set percentage. Some lend on cross-border earnings routinely. Say so at the start.
- Self-employed and business owners. Lenders usually want two years of accounts, and they treat directors' salary, dividends and retained profit differently.
- New builds. Check how long your offer lasts against the builder's completion date, and how much of any incentive a lender will accept.
- Rural homes. Out in the countryside, expect private water, septic tanks and the occasional agricultural tie.
