What you'll find
Terraces and older houses around the town centre, family estates on the higher ground, newer developments on the edges of town, and rural houses towards Sion Mills, Newtownstewart and the Sperrins.
Who buys here
First-time buyers, families, people working in Derry, and many who work in Donegal but live on the northern side of the border.
Getting about
There's no railway. The A5 runs north to Derry, about twenty minutes away, and south to Omagh.
Mortgage points to note
- Income from Donegal. If you're paid in euros, many lenders either decline or reduce the income they count. Some specialise in cross-border earners. Mention it up front.
- Very low prices. Some lenders have a minimum property value or minimum loan size. On the cheapest homes that can rule out a few lenders, so a broker will check before you apply.
- Flood risk. Parts of the town near the rivers carry flood designations. Lenders and insurers look at this, and it can affect insurance costs.
- Former Housing Executive homes. Houses bought under the house sales scheme are normal lending. Flats and maisonettes have fewer lenders.
